Confirm the agreement at the beginning

Read the engagement information and ask about anything unclear. Check who the client is, which issue is covered, and whether help extends through a particular event or the entire matter. Record any expenses you may need to approve. If your expectations differ from the written scope, discuss that immediately rather than assuming the arrangement will expand later.

Agree on a realistic communication plan

Ask which channel to use, how urgent developments should be reported, and who may contact you from the legal team. The ABA’s Model Rule 1.4 addresses keeping clients informed and explaining matters so they can make informed decisions. It is a model rule; the professional rules applicable to your lawyer govern. Request an explanation when an update leaves you unsure what happens next.

Provide complete information and useful updates

Send documents through the agreed method and identify what has changed since the last discussion. Include facts that may weaken your position; withholding them can make advice less useful. Tell the lawyer promptly about new notices, direct contact from the other side, or changes to your contact details. Avoid sending a stream of unlabeled files when a short explanation would make them understandable.

Keep decisions distinct from preparation tasks

A lawyer may prepare options or draft a response while needing your instructions on an important choice. Ask what decision is required, what information supports it, and how much time is available. If you do not understand a proposal, say so before approving it. Keep your own note of the decision and the actions each person has agreed to complete.

Ask for a clear closing handover

When the assignment ends, confirm what has been completed, what remains open, and whether future dates need attention. Ask how to obtain copies of the relevant file and whom to contact about follow-up questions. A completed task may not resolve every related issue. Keep the closing information with your important papers so you can explain the position to any later adviser.

Make the next conversation easier

Your preparation checklist

  • An understood scope and expense arrangement.
  • Reliable contact methods and an urgency plan.
  • Complete documents and prompt factual updates.
  • A closing handover covering remaining responsibilities.
