Ask which programme is assessing you

An organisation may run several services with different funding and eligibility rules. Find out which one your enquiry concerns. LSC-funded assistance has financial eligibility requirements, including rules concerning income and assets, but other funding can support different services. An income figure copied from a general article is not enough to decide whether a particular provider can assist you.

Describe your household accurately

Ask how the programme defines a household and whose income it needs to consider. Explain changes such as irregular work, separation, a recent loss of earnings, or support that is no longer available. Do not omit a person or an account because you assume it will make the application easier. Let the provider explain how its rules apply to the facts.

Gather the requested financial information

Prepare the records the programme asks for, which may include earnings, benefits, account information, or relevant expenses. Distinguish a regular monthly amount from a one-time payment. If a document is unavailable, explain why and ask what alternative evidence can be considered. Keep a copy of the information supplied so later updates are consistent and easy to understand.

Expect questions beyond money

Be ready to identify the other parties, the location, the subject of the dispute, and any existing proceedings. These details can affect service coverage and conflict checks. A programme may also have limited resources or priorities. Meeting a financial test should therefore not be treated as a guarantee of a lawyer, a particular service, or a successful result.

Understand the response and your next option

If the programme declines, ask whether the reason is eligibility, missing information, service boundaries, or capacity. Request any available explanation or reconsideration process rather than assuming there is a universal appeal. Ask about another appropriate service and whether a change in circumstances matters. Keep attending to deadlines while seeking clarification or applying elsewhere.

Your preparation checklist

  • The specific programme and its current criteria.
  • An accurate household and income explanation.
  • Requested records and explanations for gaps.
  • The reason for any refusal and possible next steps.
