Check the format and limits

Find out whether the clinic is by appointment, walk-in, telephone, or online. Ask about eligible subjects, location requirements, and any documents needed beforehand. ABA Free Legal Answers, for example, provides brief civil legal advice to qualifying users without an expectation of long-term representation. Other clinics have their own terms, so read the instructions for the service you will actually use.

Choose one question to lead with

A focused question might concern what a notice means or which part of a draft agreement needs attention. Provide enough context to make the question answerable. A long account of every disagreement can crowd out the issue that matters today. If there are several topics, place them in order of urgency and ask which can be addressed in the session.

Have the important documents ready

Keep the complete notice, order, or agreement available, including dates and reference numbers. For a remote meeting, check that you can open the files while speaking and use the delivery method requested by the clinic. Do not post your papers publicly to obtain a faster answer. If the adviser cannot review a document, ask how that limits the guidance given.

Turn the explanation into a next-step list

Before finishing, repeat your understanding in your own words. Ask which action is yours, whether more advice is needed, and what date matters next. Write down unfamiliar terms so you can check them later. If the answer depends on information you do not yet have, identify that gap instead of treating a conditional explanation as a final conclusion.

Know what happens after the session

Ask whether follow-up questions are permitted and whether any referral is being made. Keep the advice and documents together, noting the facts you provided. A clinic visit does not by itself mean someone will appear in court or monitor the case. If an urgent deadline is approaching, do not rely on an online question receiving a response in time.

Make the next conversation easier

Your preparation checklist

  • The clinic’s eligibility, format and service limits.
  • One main question and the closest deadline.
  • The complete papers needed to explain that question.
  • A written next-step list and follow-up expectations.
